How To Interpret Laboratory Results for Airborne Fungal (Mould) Samples

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Introduction Laboratory results for airborne mould and bacteria concentrations can be difficult to interpret for two major reasons. First, there are no set maximum exposure limits (MELs) or threshold level values for airborne indoor mould and bacteria concentrations. Setting MELs would be difficult due to limitations in air sampling techniques (Kung’u, 2004), variability in sensitivity to microbial exposure among the human population, occurrence of a large number of different types of biological and chemical pollutants in indoor environment (Morey, 2001) and limited data on exposure-response relationship.

Newsletter of the Mycological Society of America Limitations and Considerations in Air Sampling

Limitations and Considerations in Air Sampling, Sample Analysis and Result Interpretation for Airborne Mould Spores by Jackson Kung’u Airborne mould material particularly spores are recognized allergens at normal concentrations to an estimated 20% of the population (Kendrick, 2000). It is not always possible to establish a correlation between mould spore counts in the environment and the presen...

Using Measurements of Fungal Activity by Isothermal Microcalorimetry as a Base for Modelling Fungal Growth in Buildings

Mould growth in buildings affects indoor air quality. To prevent mould growth in building components, there is a need for design tools that take into account both microclimate and mould growth patterns. We propose a novel laboratory method to assess mould growth as a function of RH, temperature and substrate by measuring the thermal power produced by the fungal metabolism as a measure of growth...

Monitoring of Airborne Fungi in Two General Hospitals in Shiraz, Southern Iran

Hospitalized patients have a potential risk for nosocomial infections. Airborne fungi are one of the main causes of fungal infections in this group. The objective of this study was to investigate the concentrations and species of airborne fungi in two general hospitals in Shiraz, southern Iran. Air samples were collected from high-risk wards, using settle plate method. Fungal colonies were iden...

Indoor airborne fungal spores, house dampness and associations with environmental factors and respiratory health in children.

BACKGROUND Children living in a damp house are more likely to suffer from respiratory symptoms and it has been suggested that exposure to fungi is an important contributing factor. However, more knowledge about underlying mechanisms for the association are needed. OBJECTIVE To identify associations between measures of house dampness, levels of airborne fungal spores, housing factors and healt...

The Rate of Airborne Fungal Contamination in Yazd Textile Factories in 2007

Background & Aims: Fungi are among the most important biological agents in air pollution. Textile factories are known as high risk places for contamination with fungal spores and metabolites. Since Yazd is one of the most important textile industry centers, this study was conducted to determine the concentration and types of airborne fungi in Yazd textile factories. Methods: A total of 235 indo...
